Cast iron is long established as the ideal material for street furniture offering high tensile strength, excellent levels of durability and long-term corrosion resistance. Even though cast iron is probably one of the oldest materials still used in engineering, it is seeing something of a rebirth of fortunes in the modern world over recent years, with regards environmental impact and sustainability, as we strive to reduce, reuse and recycle.
John Ruskin, writer and author from the 19th Century wrote these words relating to cast iron,
"It breathes air, burns itself up in oxygen and so gives up its own life so that we may live ours."
This is due on the fact that Cast Iron doesn’t ‘rust’ in the traditional sense, instead it oxidises very slowly over many years. This extended process gives off iron ashes which are carbon based and good for the environment. They promote green growth on plants and increase plank tonic life in the oceans, thus helping to combat global warming. Recent studies have shown that adding iron dust to the oceans could have a dramatic positive effect on their health, increasing the oxygen output of our seas and oceans and reducing greenhouse gasses.
On a practical note, this slow oxidization makes iron very long lasting making it ideal for exterior street furniture.
Cast iron is fully recyclable; in fact it can be recycled ad-infinitum making cast iron the most environmentally responsible choice
All our cast iron street furniture products are cast using the cleanest technologies available, in accordance with ISO 14001 environmental management procedures.
